BUILDING UP NOBLE CHARACTER ON HUMANITY AND DIVERSITY

We can collectively feel the positive impacts of digital technology transformation, including broad access to information content, the ease of creating our information through social media, democracy, and citizen journalism compensating for public dissatisfaction with media and politics, among others. However, in the atmosphere of postmodernism, which envisions the realization of a plural society, the post-truth era has led to a strong phenomenon of exclusive truth claims over one’s beliefs. Society becomes more susceptible to misinformation due to the development of ideologically and belief-aligned communities. On the other hand, digital technology contributes to the confusion of truth, as virality is considered more important than the quality of information and ethics.

The phenomenon of self-isolation or separation from communities with different ideologies, beliefs, and religions occurs not only in parts of the general society but also in academic circles, including students. A survey conducted by UPT PKM UB in 2022 evidenced the low practice of active tolerance among students, approximately 10 percent. Theoretically, these exclusivist views are clearly unsustainable in today’s cosmopolitan world culture, an era often referred to as the multicultural era, where Bhikhu Parekh (2008) defines multiculturalism as: “just as a society with several religions or languages is multi-religious or multilingual, a society containing several cultures is multicultural.”

The presence of this book chapter, which is a collection of outputs from the UPT PKM International Conference themed “Character and Diversity: Building up Noble Character on Humanity and Diversity,” is part of the academic community’s efforts concerned with character and diversity issues to contribute intellectually to the problems above, of course, with various perspectives and knowledge horizons from the authors.

I extend my congratulations and success on the publication of this valuable work. May it be a valuable and beneficial contribution to humanity.
